Breakwater Live presents The Gumbo Brothers

The Gumbo Brothers

For the past thirteen years, The Gumbo Brothers have facilitated the musical and cultural traditions of New Orleans to the people of Los Angeles, California. During that time, this 7-piece New Orleans funk band has performed for hundreds of events including the KJAZZ “Hollywood and Highland” concert series, KJAZZ Howard Hughes Center concert series, and the Santa Monica Pier “Twilight Dance Series.” They have traveled as far as Chiang Mai, Thailand to perform for the Lanna World Music Festival and have shared the stage with New Orleans greats like Rebirth Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Leo Nocentelli of The Meters.

On March 25, 2014, the Gumbo Brothers were featured in the opening scene of the CBS television show, NCIS: New Orleans, where they performed their original track, “Keep It Raw.” The Times Picayune of New Orleans published an interview with bandleader; Johann Stein, who spoke of his Louisiana heritage and how it related to The Gumbo Brothers involvement with NCIS: New Orleans.

The Gumbo Brothers debut, “Funky Freedom,” released in 2007, was an exploration of the dynamic and rhythmic capabilities of the band. The press described it as “Swampy funk with thick grooves that is deep in the pocket, right where it should be!”

It was followed up by the 2008 release “On Fire,” which is a collection of original Mardi Gras songs partially inspired by the meeting of Big Chief Yellow Pocahontas, Darryl Montana after his displacement to Los Angeles after Katrina. Tracks like “Here Come the Tribe” and “Keep it Raw,” left no doubt as to their connection to New Orleans Mardi Gras culture.

Also in 2008, they produced The Gumbo Family Holiday Album of 14 songs performed by 25 different musicians where all of the proceeds went to Students Run LA; a program which mentors at-risk youth to stay in school through goal setting and fitness programs.

Founding members Johann Stein (guitar, vocals) and Greg Sonnier (bass, vocals) has co-produced their new single, “Summertime” with Andy Kravitz at The Bunker and Bordello Studios in Venice, California which was released in June 2015. The Gumbo Brothers will follow this up with another full length album of funky grooves and melodies working with Jamelle Williams (trumpet), and Matt DeMerritt (sax) and Trevor Steer on organ.

Along with the annual hosting of the Venice Beach Mardi Gras parade since 2003, The Gumbo Brothers will continue to excite and entertain crowds with their electrifying live show throughout Southern California for years to come.
